For the fourth consecutive year, the fishing returns of the shelly season of the roads of Brest are analyzed. For the black Scallop, principal species currently exploited, the goal is to know the evolution of the fisheries. For the shell St Jacques, season 86-87 saw a light improvement of the captures due to a good recruitment during summer 84. In the first chapter the general conditions of the unfolding of the countryside are treated, in the following are analyzed the captures of black scallop then of shell St Jacques. In appendix the data of effort and production of the other species during the season appear. |

Scallop Pecten maximus larvae have been cultured at the Argenton and Tinduff (Brittany, France) hatcheries with antibiotic treatment (chloramphenicol at 8 ppm) for 15 yr. Without treatment, outbreak of disease has normally occurred between Day 12 and Day 19 or sometimes earlier. A bacteriological study of larvae reared with and without antibiotic was performed over a 4 yr period. Among the collected strains, 2 clusters (C and F) of vibrios were present at high densities only in larvae cultured without treatment. One cluster (C) was routinely isolated over the 4 yr of study, while the other (F) was collected only in the third year. Their virulence with respect to scallop larvae and their lack of infectivity with respect to oyster larvae were demonstrated in... |

Since 1973, spat collection bas been conducted by IFREMER in the bay of Brest. This collection aimed at providing juveniles of Pecten maximus (1973-77) and then Chlamys varia(1977-87) in order to improve the management of the fishing grounds of the two species. Since 1982, the efforts have been focussed on the P. maximus spat production through the hatchery/nursery systems and the intermediate culture. Juveniles are seeded above a minimum size to create an additional population. In parallel, the levels of spat yied/collector have been followed as a pre-recruit index. At present time, there is no increase of spat collection during 1985-1990. Moreover, the results rise up the question of water quality in the bay of Brest for this group apparently very... |

Acute viral necrosis virus (AVNV) is the causative agent of a serious disease resulting in high mortality in cultured Chinese scallops, Chlamys farreri. We have sequenced and analyzed the complete genome of AVNV. The AVNV genome is a linear, double-stranded DNA molecule of 210,993 bp with a nucleotide composition of 38.5% G + C. A total of 123 open reading frames were predicted to encode functional proteins, ranging from 41 to 1,878 amino acid residues. The DNA sequence of AVNV is 97% identical to that of ostreid herpesvirus 1 (OsHV-1), and the amino acid sequences of the encoded proteins of these two viruses are 94-100% identical. The genomic organization of AVNV is similar to that of OsHV-1, and consists of two unique regions (170.4 kb and 3.4 kb,... |

The main objective of this study was to identify algal diets that maximize the survival and growth and alter the biochemical content of Pecten maximus larvae with the aim of improving metamorphosis. We also evaluated the potential of the cryptophyceae Rhodomonas salina as a food source for these larvae. Two flagellates, Isochrysis aff. galbana (T) and Pavlova lutheri (P), and two diatoms, Chaetoceros gracilis (C) or Skeletonema costatum (S), were tested as two ternary diets, namely PTC and PTS. PTC and PTS were compared with diets that also included R. salina (R). The addition of R. salina and the replacement of C. gracilis by S. costatum in the traditional hatchery diet seem to be two interesting alternatives for increasing the productivity of larval... |

Giant scallops, Placopecten magellanicus, respond to the presence of starfish predators with an escape response consisting of a series of rapid valve adductions that allow the scallop to jump or swim away from the predator. To evaluate the coordination of the activity of the tonic and phasic muscles during such escape responses, we recorded their force production by attaching a force gauge to the shell of intact scallops and then stimulating the scallops with starfish. These recordings showed series of phasic contractions (claps) separated by prolonged tonic contractions. Numerous characteristics could be quantified from these recordings including the maximal force, mean force during the first minute, force, frequency and number of claps per series, as... |

The aim of this article is to explore, through a hedonic approach, the factors that might explain the price variability for the French-managed fishery of scallop at primary fish markets. In addition to factors classically identified in the current literature like intrinsic product characteristics or markets situation, the characteristics of operators are tested. The relationships of loyalty between sellers and buyers, and market assiduity are notably considered. |

This report compiles 17 short and illustrated syntheses concerning the natural strategies of reproduction and the artificial control of the reproductive process for the flat oyster, Ostrea edulis, the japanese oyster, Crassostrea gigas, the mussels, Mytilus edulis and My ti/us galloprovincialis, the scallop, Pecten maximus. An additional syntheses is presented, as a comparison within molluscs, which are the main research topics at IFREMER concerning the artificial control of the reproductive processes in Marine Fish. Three main subjects are documented : 1. the ecophysiology of the natural period of reproduction in the wild, 2. the methods developed in the hatcheries for the artificial control of the reproductive periods, the gametes collection and the... |

The anthropogenic introduction in U.K. waters of the north-American marine gastropod Crepidula fornicata (Linné, 1758), commonly called slipper limpet, and its consecutive spreading has led in less than a century to the invasion of a part of benthic grounds along the North-European coasts. Competition for space has hampered the maintenance of the native scallop Pecten maximus, whereas dredge clogging has drastically limited scallop fishing, especially in the Western English Channel. In order to assess the possible future distribution and abundance of both species (Crepidula and Pecten), an original model of slipper limpet chains joined to a simple year-class model of the scallop (Ménesguen and Grégoris, 2017) has been coupled to a connectivity matrix... |

During a series of experiments, bacteriological elements in scallop larval rearing were investigated: larvae susceptibility to pathogens as a function of their age, and the use of probiotic bacteria during larviculture. Younger larvae (d5 PF) were highly more susceptible to pathogenic-challenge than their older siblings, which were challenged at an older age (d15 PF). A challenge with 104 CFU mL−1 of V. pectenicida killed 100% of d5 PF larvae 7 days following challenge, yet killed only 9% of d15 PF larvae 9 days following challenge. Use of the probiotics Phaeobacter gallaeciensis, Alteromonas macleodii 0444 and Neptunomonas sp. 0536, provided for larger larvae, a high yield of competent larvae and, perhaps more importantly, protection against... |

Pathogenic bacteria are known to be one of the main factors affecting Pecten maximus larval survival in hatcheries. As a result, juvenile production often relies on the use of antibiotics during larval culture. However, limitations of the usage of chemicals such as chloramphenicol in aquaculture have been reinforced due to their negative environmental impact and alternatives are accordingly needed. Thus, the importance of bacterial transfer from oocytes to larvae has been studied here as well as procedures to limit larval mortality in P. maximus. In order to reduce bacterial contamination during larval development, we focused on two periods, broodstock conditioning and post-fertilization. The animals were conditioned for 2 months with two erythromycin... |
